Worms Of The Earth : The Lesser Ophidian Gate EP [2010]
It's gratifying in the digital age to see an artist rise through the mire of any genre he or she may be associated with and focus on improvement of style and technique. Such has been the case with Dan Barrett and his Worms of the Earth project; with a plethora of web-only releases showcasing an abrasive style of harsh industrial and power noise, it wasn't until his official debut in 2008, The Angels of Prostitution, that Barrett's musical path was set, marking an improved production and compositional ability that stood out as a work of unbridled intensity and aggression. With his sophomore release, The Lesser Ophidian Gate, Worms of the Earth continues to explore the darker, more mysterious and dismal recesses of the musical psyche.
Equal parts industrial, power noise, and dark ambient, The Lesser Ophidian Gate takes the formulas set forth by the previous album and pushes them into a much more uniform direction.

Wolfskin + Last Industrial Estate : Stonegates of Silence [2010]
Wolfskin is the dark ambient/ritual/industrial project of Portugese musician Johan Aernus.
Seeking to reach some kind of archaic consciousness J.A. sees Wolfskin as a diary, a collection of images, moods and emotions from these explorations. Organic flows of sound, acoustic instrumentation and manipulated sounds (usually of non-musical origin) makes Wolfskin music a dark voyage through the "hidden fortress" of our mind.
And so the journey formally ends for Wolfskin, 15 years from whence it began with the release of the Hidden Fortress cassette back in 1995. The essence of Wolfskin has transformed and mutated throughout the years, reaching on "The Stonegates of Silence" it's simpler form….one of desolation, solitude, insanity and death, the final frontiers of human existence. ...the second sonorous calving coming from the reproductive session (just musical one!) between Henrik "Nordvargr" Bjorkk, a Swedish sound adulterator - maybe some of you have already listened something signed under other pseudonyms such as MaschinenZimmer 412, Hydra Head 9, Folkstorm or Toroidh (my favorite one, maybe for some musical nuances close to Raison d'Etre releases) -, quite famous for his artistic fruitfulness in the so-called "grey area" for being one of the first sound-artists dealing with the so-called "black industrial" music (something which some reviewer names "dark ambient" as well nowadays), whose nickname means "northern wolf", and the American noise artist Andy O'Sullivan aka Goat, whose researches are more noise-oriented as well, giving to birth this freaky creature called Goatvargr - you can imagine some bestial character, whose body is half-goat and half-wolf... -, which musically could stand as a sort of alternative path towards the thick woods of power electronics, black metal and cinematic ritual drones.

Tholen : Neuropol [2010]
Credit to Tholen for justifying this elaborate album description by creating a suitable soundtrack. Neuropol is as desolate as you might expect, with waves of bass and drawn-out drones placed in such a way to preserve a feel of gaping emptiness within the soundscape, occasionally broken up with the soft cycle of hydraulic machinery or the subdued whispers of Neuropol’s inhabitants.
The opening piece is strong, with thick echoes of angelic choir put in the unlikely accompaniment of a nuclear reactor buzz. Neuropol is most engrossing at busier moments like these, where sounds either melt into one another like fragile mental images or grate alongside each other in chilling (and cleverly placed) juxtaposition. Quieter passages can occasionally expose some of Tholen’s more blatant techniques to achieve “twisted paranoia”-type vibe...

With ‘Tanssit on Loppu Nyt’, Karjalan Sissit once more sharpen shuddering steel, blade storms of wailing metallic symphony fulminate violently, tremors twisting a surreality of soft swollen hills, lonely forests, and lumbering modern ruins.
Karjalan Sissit continue with this album the tradition of unholy bombast, fusilladic percussive assaults and the dissonancy of the summoned damned; though where tradition intertwines with the demonic, the satanic, the pastiche, this album clearly demarcates the absence of any such allusions leaving the music as nothing other than an instrument of puissance – a means to a terrifying end. Harrowing and subliminal enough to appeal to fans of power electronics and dark ambient, it is seemingly aimed at neither, preferring its own tortured pariahdom as a cathartic. And unlike the aforementioned two genres that at times bleed and dabble in one another, ‘Tanssit on Loppu Nyt’ slices the canvas with dark and self-maniacal glory, sans the occult. Lumbering malformed drums ululate choirs of malformed shells into edifices sodden in the blood of the torn throat from the rampaging vocals. Orchestral directive wraps that landscape, oily ceremonial masses of a subversive mien, leaching away mystery and otherworldliness to the mascara limning mordant, arachnoid holes.
