Genocide Organ have earned their place as masters of the craft within industrial and power electronics circles, and rightfully so for having been together 31 years at this point. Not many other bands of their caliber come to mind when considering their consistency of live performance and recorded output with respect to their age. Since the release of ‘Under-Kontrakt’ in 2011, they have expanded upon their Archive line of releases, published ‘Absolute Truth’ with The Grey Wolves, and brought to light some versions of older works on ‘KwaZulu-NaTaL’. Though the tracks of ‘KwaZulu-NaTaL’ are stated to have been recorded in 1994, the production quality is of exceptionally high fidelity by contrast to 1995’s ‘Mind Control’ and most of their body of work, for that matter.

It was perhaps the delayed release of ‘KwaZulu-NaTaL’ in 2014 which set my expectations of what ‘Obituary of the Americas’ might sound like, but contrary to this its production is quite similar in characteristics to most of G.O.’s other recordings. This is of small consideration; more importantly, the release of Obituary holds a logical and well-defined place in the chronology of Genocide Organ’s recorded output. Whereas ‘Under-Kontrakt was concerned with military conflict of Sri Lanka, ‘Obituary of the Americas’ turns focus to the United States and more generally the relations between regions of North & South America on the whole. From the official press release:

Genocide Organ have hidden in the jungles, hills, deserts, slums and cities of the Americas for 4 years. Being present on the shores of Panama, in the cardboard areas of El Salvador, the jungles of Guatemala, the drug roots of Bolivia, the human-drug trafficking (sic) in Mexico, the just in-justice in no-go areas just across the iron border of the US.”

“Stop fearing death” - Belgium producer Laurent Delogne will surprise many listeners with his radical reinvention of Le Moderniste’s style on the mysteriously titled “Desistere Mortem Timere”: The tough industrial rhythms are reduced to putrefied debris, instead this is almost classical death industrial, a marriage of pitch black ambience with the aggression of power electronics – albeit in a contemporary production, thus providing an intense listening experience, and real hellride through the evils that men do. Following the rhythmic impact of his 2013 HANDS release “Too Rough Is Never Enough“, Le Moderniste dives deep into the darkness with this follow-up. Starting with crackle and hiss, “Desistere Mortem Timere” fathoms the realms of death industrial, with throbbing bass structures, desolate ambience and walls of distortion. Nevertheless, it’s primarily the blackness of the bottomless pit impregnating the entire 74 minutes of “Desistere Mortem Timere”, an expression of tortured souls, and one of the most uncompromisingly sinister releases on HANDS for a while

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Theologian : A Life Of Constant Struggle [2009]

Just about everyone with even a passing interest in Dark Ambient, Death Industrial or Power Electronics will be familiar with Lee Bartow, if not by name then by his moniker of Leech or his most well known project Navicon Torture Technologies. Sadly, that one is RIP, but Leech continues to record with different groups and under different guises. One that caught me off guard was this one, Theologian.

Within the first few minutes of tape opener “This Is Wrong”, you’ll peg this immediately as one of Leech’s’ projects, you’ll also notice hardcore Atrax Morgue worship. The delayed, reverb-heavy vocals reminiscent of the classic NTT style, but the multiple-layered ambience of that sound has been replaced by more aggressive and minimal synth loops and rhythms. Not to imply that it’s boring, quite the opposite, just that where NTT is more brooding and ominous, Theologian comes across more ‘in your face’ and confrontational. Tracks like “The Last Grain In The Hourglass” could almost be labeled straight PE if the vocals were more distorted.

A1 This Is Wrong
A2 Confined To Quarters
B1 The Last Grain In The Hourglass
B2 Severity

Notes▼
Released in an edition of 50. The tape comes in a black medical grade ziplock bag, with a 6x6 professionally printed insert, a Theologian sticker, and a pair of black latex gloves.

Skin Area : Journal Noir / Lithium Path ( 2 x CD Limited Edition) [2006]

Epic. A word normally associated with film but applicable here to this release. Only instead of a Peter Jackson visual kaleidoscope this is more akin to an Andy Warhol five hour avant-garde production. A double CD release that leaves the listener with more questions than answers. And none the wiser despite repeated plays. The debate to its musical merits will continue for a long time. But will anyone really care in the end? The answer is that you all should. For this labour of love… years in the making… is one of the most challenging and perplexing releases of this, or even for that matter, any past and future releases.

What Martin Bladh (IRM) and Magnus Lindh, with contributions from Carl Abrahamsson, Anne-Marie Thim (Arcana) and others, has achieved with "Journal Noir / Lithium Path" is the ritual tearing up of the rule book. In comes a visionary alternative music updated for the ‘here and now’...

Mz.412 : Nordik Battle Signs [1999]

NORDIK BATTLE SIGNS has been released back in 1999 and it sees the industrial noise level increasing thanks to a massive use of distortion and feedback. It's like MZ.412 wanted to destabilize the audience making them lose their consciousness. Harsh noises, power electronics, malevolent vocals and industrial drumming are the core of these recordings which see also as guests, Ordo Equilibrio on vocals on the completed version of the long deleted 'Legion Ultra' 7", here included as bonus track and on "Satan Jugend II: Global konquering".

IRM : Red Album [1999]

IRM is a Swedish industrial / power electronics project that should be well-known to anyone familiar with Cold Meat Industry's catalog at the turn of the millennium. When their existence began in Norrköping in 1998, they only had their demo to prove their existence, a one-sided tape of a mere 50 copies entitled “The Green Tape”. After catching the eye of Roger Karmanik, IRM saw their first official release through Cold Meat Industry the following year with The Red Album, an LP-only release featured on both black and pink wax. Their first CD release wasn't until the year after when Oedipus Dethroned was released and gave most of the power electronics underground a chance to hear the project, not only because of its CD release, but also because the album wasn't strictly limited. IRM would go on to work with CMI again twice in their career, but since that moment it has been mostly Leech (Navicon Torture Technologies)'s label Annihilvs
