ESA : The Sea & The Silence [2008]

The Sea & the Silence has much of the same furious, intense upbeat savagery that Tympanik Audio has quickly become known for throughout the rhythmic industrial world, but on another end it has perhaps the darkest flavor that the label has seen thus far in their career. The Sea & the Silence ventures far beyond the realms of Endif and Totakeke and their urban scrawls, into something much deeper and further down the trail.

Necrophorus : Elinrós [2005]

With the sound of a bowl a journey begins through an aural landscape of imagination and mysticism. Imagine a spirit transformed into a single breath, woods that become alive through vibrations from the earth and water that electrifies nature and bends its laws. If the previous Necrophorus album Drifting in Motion was a bit icy and stiff, Elínrós is a warm and animated being. Peter Andersson (Raison D'etre) has created four beautiful compositions that blend and evolve into eternal tranquillity. Included on the album is also a re-mix of "The Source of Underwater Bleakness" (originally released on the Last Bleak Days compilation in 2002). Experience Elínrós and life will simply not be the same anymore.

Ulf Söderberg : Nattljus [1995]

The debut solo offering from Ulf Söderberg, frontman of Sephiroth, is a journey into the sound worlds of numerous places at once. The gorgeous gothic architecture his compositions are framed in resemble no one else's. They move the listener in a very specific way to the interior, far inside the composition's marrow, and then leave her or him there. Söderberg's music has the stamp of the dark northlands all over it, but there is a warmth and passion in it as well. It is foreboding, mournful, dramatic -- even epic in some cases -- yet never without a place for the listener to enter and be projected, along with the music, into some heretofore unseen sphere where there are not only no easy answers, but none period. There is only atmosphere. Aside from some flutes of various types played by Anders Hagberg, some handclaps, and moral support, Söderberg does everything himself -- the programming, the shape and construction of the considerable harmonic architectures, and melodic shapes enhanced by everything from didgeridoos to samplers.

A listen to "Våroffer" and its driven dance rhythm interspersed with the sweet darkness of space and layered atmospheres would make a listener reconsider industrial music as a music with potential if it were this humanly executed. "Frostblommor" is its opposite, a piece of shimmering electronica wrapped inside a cocoon of silence as it gently moves its way to the surface with circularity and deliberation. By the time the chorus of voices enters, signifying change, and the spaciousness is layered with a spare foreboding chord, we can feel tension at the beginning of a darkness that goes unresolved as the piece fades into the ether. However, the very next work, the dark beauty that is "Det Vakande Tinget I Nordväst," gives us loss, grief, hope, drama, redemption, and transcendence...but from what to where is unclear. And that's as it should be. Ambiguity is the hallmark of mystery, especially in music, and Ulf Söderberg understands this implicitly. He leaves the listener astonished enough to be weary from the journey, yet willing to take it again -- and the next time go further into these sonic landscapes carved from his imagination and skill as a composer of not only music, but emotion. Truly mysterious and truly fantastic.

Atomine Elektrine : Binomial Fusion [2004]

Pure Nordic genius, Peter Andersson is the talented man behind Raison D'être and a number of brilliant musical projects like Stratvm Terror and Necrophorous, each one with a very impressive and distinctive sound. Experimenting with ATOMINE ELEKTRINE since the early 90's, the main influences to create this project came from the old krautrock school in its more cosmic and electronic side represented by artists like Klaus Schulze, Kraftwerk and even Neu!. However, incorporating ideas coming from various other sources, like the orchestral Cold Meat-ish trademark of the time and the sacral beauty of Raison D'être, ATOMINE ELEKTRINE came out as a peculiar mutation of the kraut heroes; more rhythmic and a bit less experimental and far-out than expected. A new form of life. Labelled as 'new-age-sacro-trance' at the time, "Elemental Severance" actually shows a wide spectrum of electronic styles resulting in a hybrid, yet cohesive masterwork.

From trancey rhythms and dreamy, sacral ambiences to occasional male/female choirs, melancholic melodies and well inserted samples. As if the imaginary past and present could touch each other, everything is involved by a majestic, unique surreal atmosphere, producing gorgeous sounds that leaves you truly mesmerized. Included here are 5 bonus tracks taken from the same recording sessions. The overall aura of "Elemental Severance" is also present on "Atom Xtension", the disc 2 of the set. Recorded in two distinct periods of time, the first part has nearly the same succesful elements, albeit with a slightly more eclectic nature. Ambient beat driven soundscapes with layers of synth treatments fill the air on some tracks, while semi-dub, chill-out compositions take place towards the end of the disc. Both works were recovered and throughly remastered by Peter Andersson on the profile section, making BINOMIAL FUSION a unique document of this fantastic project. On his own words, "this material sounds now better than ever before"! 140 minutes of music, including 5 bonus tracks, housed in a gatefold digisleeve-like packaging plus mini-poster. Limited edition of 800 copies.

Necrophorus : Underneath The Spirit Of Tranquility [2011]

Necrophorus is one of the many projects spawned by the creative madness of Peter Andersson of Raison D’etre fame, and although it bears many similarities with his flagship, they differ on quite a few planes. This makes them siblings of the same brood while standing strong on their own unique atmospheres. When it comes to mastering the intricate balance between dark atmospheres and bright evolving harmonies, few artists show such a natural affinity as Peter Andersson. I had the opportunity to attend to one of his many live shows in Germany and was quickly swept away by the elegant yet simplistic scenery he used in combination with the rumbling infernal atmosphere created by a laptop and some odd pieces of scrap metal. Underneath the Spirit of Tranquility is a remixed and generally remoulded version of the album of the same name from 1996, and is again sold together with a subsection called The Impressions of Salvador Dali.

Geomatic : 64 Light Years Away [2010]

'64 Light Years Away' is heady stuff that will carry you worlds away; a real soundtrack for the mind. It makes me think of the best of old-style Delerium, Steve Roach and Michael Stearns, but several steps beyond. In no way does this sound the least bit New Agey. There are plenty of dark ambiences, post-industrial tribal rhythms, and deep dark delicious dubby delights, often spiced by Middle Eastern melodies and the wail of the muezzin in minarets. Even within the complexity of the music (and there is a good deal of complexity), there is a spatiality in the music that approaches the cosmic. Extremely well done with a variety of sounds and sonic motifs. Haunting, eclectic and mystical would be appropriate adjectives. The album stands up to repeated plays and still you will find more layers to unravel. If ever an album deserved to be called AWESOME, '64 Light Years Away' would fit that description. It's a heavy trip that is bound to grab your psyche, blow your mind and take you to realms you've never been before.
